Weil der Stadt (Hausen), 25.05.2022: Around the globe, it unfortunately happens almost every day: an earthquake. On average, quakes reach magnitudes that put people and buildings at risk three times a week. Measures to ensure the earthquake resistance of structures are therefore indispensable in many regions and are regulated in Germany, for example, in DIN EN 1992-4.
In the event of an earthquake, cracks form in the concrete. This means that there is a risk that the shear bond between the anchor and the pipe will crack and the fixed object - for example a high-bay warehouse - will come loose from the anchorage and collapse.
The anchoring solutions for earthquake resistance
The anchoring set from ROBUSTA-GAUKEL, a specialist in assembly, anchoring, safety technology and formwork as well as sophisticated special solutions, passed the endurance test in April 2022 and received the building authority approval C2 for the highest stress level of buildings from the German Institute for Building Technology (DIBt). This covers cracks up to 0.8 mm wide.
This solution thus offers the greatest possible protection for buildings and people in the event of an earthquake. The damage caused by earthquakes can be significantly reduced. The anchoring set has even been used successfully in earthquake-stricken Naples: the challenge was to fix high-bay warehouses in a factory building in an earthquake-proof manner. The fastening solution has been proving its stability there since 2015.
Areas of application for the set include anchorages of all kinds from steel structures and high-bay warehouses in silo design to machinery and precast concrete parts.

The ROBUSTA anchoring set not only enables earthquake-proof construction, but also brings another bonus: Flexibility.
The usual challenges on the construction site are well known: The anchors are concreted in, but it takes weeks or even months until the steel erector starts his work at the construction site. By then, some of the protruding dowels have already been knocked over by construction machinery and changes have been made to the construction plan. If, for example, the anchoring points of the steel column are now somewhat further apart than originally planned, bonded anchors have to be subsequently drilled into the concrete. There is a risk that the anchor will hit the reinforcement and cut it. This weakens the reinforcement of the floor slab and thus negatively affects the load-bearing capacity.
The anchoring set is the perfect link between rough concrete construction and steel construction with much tighter tolerances. The great advantage is that the anchor rods with anchor plates are not precisely measured and cast in the pipes until the structural work has been completed. In the first step, only the profiled corrugated sheathing is concreted into the floor slab or foundation, leaving a practical installation tolerance of up to 10 cm! So if the anchor pipe shifts a bit after concreting, this is no problem due to the clearance in the pipe. The dimensions of the pipes and the anchor plates are matched to each other in such a way that there is a lateral play of +/- 1.5 cm or more.
The complete package from a single source
The set includes installation aids and templates, markings and grout. Improvisation or elaborate and homemade template supports are unnecessary. The dimensions and shapes of the anchoring sets can be optimally adapted to the respective load combination.
With the specially developed and newly revised dimensioning program "Dimensions EQ" (EQ stands for Earth Quake) and the corresponding DXF or DWG files, the placement of the anchoring sets can be easily calculated by ROBUSTA.
The practical anchoring set thus not only fulfills the specifications for earthquake resistance according to C2, but also enables the highest possible flexibility on the construction site.
